Mock Newbery Club

Mock Newbery Club

Fifth graders can join the Mock Newbery Club in the fall. Taylor Elementary teams up with three other schools, T. J. Connor Elementary in Wheatland-Chili, Fred W. Hill Intermediate in Brockport, and Village Elementary in Hilton.

Members agree to:

  • Read five or six Newbery contenders between October and January.
  • Write thoughts and reactions in journals while reading.
  • Share ideas with each other online weekly.
  • Vote for the Mock Newbery based on the same criteria as the American Library Associate (ALA) Newbery Committee.

To celebrate their efforts and the award-winning books, one of the schools will host members from all schools right after the Newbery winner is announced by ALA, typically in January or February.  Students share their excitement about these books considered to be the best written that year while meeting new friends and readers from other schools.

The school media specialists at the four schools note how the Mock Newbery Club is a great opportunity for fifth grade students to exercise and strengthen their 21st century skills in the areas of communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.
