Principal's Message

Friday, January 31, 2020

Hello, all! I can hardly believe that February break is only two weeks away!  This month brings the 100th day of school on Thursday, February 13 and Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14.  While exchanging cards is a tradition we all enjoy, we ask that you refrain from including food items to ensure the safety and wellness of our students.  More information will be coming home from your children’s teachers on the celebrations that may be planned for this special time.

As of late, we have been seeing the impacts of social media on our student friendships and school day.  TikTok is a popular platform that I am finding students are using, however, must caution you as parents of the explicit content that can easily be found and incorporated into posts within this site. TikTok can be a kid-friendly experience. In 2019, after settling with the Federal Trade Commission for child privacy violations due to all the children under 13 on the site, the developers created a separate section of the app for kids that only allows them to access curated, clean videos: They can't comment, search, or post their own videos. However, bypassing that section only requires entering a false birthdate. In our digital world, I ask that you be actively engaged with your child’s use of social media, messaging, and the content in which they are creating, viewing, and sharing.

As you may remember, we are partnering with the Bivona Child Advocacy Center to implement the "Child Safety Matters" curriculum, which entails two lessons at each grade level K-5.  Grades 3-5 were completed in the fall and grades K-2 lesson will being this month! If you are interested in learning more, please contact your child's homeroom teacher or click here for more information.

Lastly, thank you for your ongoing support in fundraising for the Polar Plunge, which will take place in one week on Sunday, February 9!  Proceeds from this week’s jar wars will go to support this year’s Special Olympics. While we do not have the totals from our efforts yet, I am confident that I will be plunging into freezing Lake Ontario!

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns that you may have. I value our partnership in support of each Taylor student.
